The research was made in Yanggang Province. Strong trend of North Korean Won remains unchanged. "Harvested rice and corn from the farms became available in the markets, which led declining the price of staples," explains the researcher.

The research had been made at two locations in Yanggang Province. North Korean rice price dropped by 4.8 in Chinese Yuan due to fall harvest, while the fuel price increased in terms of North Korean Won as US Dollar got stronger. It is said that business activities are sluggish in most of the markets.

Likely due to the rising value of the U.S. dollar, the value of Chinese yuan surged by 8% and the price of domestically-produced rice also shot up. However, the price of rice, as displayed in markets, has remained unchanged at 4.3 won. Meanwhile, the market price for U.S. dollars rose by 10% to 9,463 won/dollar. Going forward, attention must be paid to the trend of the North Korean won.

I surveyed two areas in North Hamgyong Province. Despite the stable exchange rate for Chinese yuan, the price of rice has been rising by about 10% since June. Gasoline, on the other hand, fell by about 20% from mid-May. The reasons for these changes are yet unknown but I intend to get to the bottom of it.

The survey location was a city in North Hamgyong Province. The price index remains stable in June. It says that the prices of the Chinese goods show stability due to active smuggling. But there are some complaints that the quality of everyday life has not improved notably. The power supply which was recovered momentarily deteriorated again.

The surveys were carried out in two locations, in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. The North Korean domestic brand, “Baekma Gasoline,” is available at the market. The price of KPW 9,310/kg is cheaper than that of the imported gasoline. The quality of the gasoline, refined from crude oil, is so low that it can’t be used for in a car. Other prices also indicated a slight rise.

It is said that people are disappointed because the high-ranking South-North Korean meeting was cancelled. The meeting was scheduled on May 16. Evidence suggests that the expectations for a dialogue between the South and the North is growing.

The surveys were carried out in three locations in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. Notably, gasoline and diesel dropped sharply. They have decreased by 35% since early April and by 65% since late February when prices peaked. As of last April, the price of gasoline was KPW8,400/kg. This was just prior to a sharp rise in fuel prices.

The reasons are not known, but there is a rumor that fuel was brought in from Chongjin City. There is also a possibility of importation from Russia.

The survey was made at two points in Yanggang Province. KPW, expected to continue depreciation, rose. The exchange rate has been stable even though the shortage of foreign currency has continued due to the ongoing economic sanction. The prices for fuel and staple food remain unchanged. The survey area is Yanggang Province. The price of fuel in this area has been constantly rising since the end of 2017. Staple foodstuffs are showing a slight drop in price. The price of firewood for cooking and heating continues to rise sharply. The average cost of wood is RMB 120-150 per 1 square meter, as the authorities are cracking down on illegal logging.

We selected two locations in Yanggang Province for survey. Gasoline and diesel have risen sharply since the beginning of the year and continue to fetch a high price. The price hike that has occurred under the international economic sanctions is due to state control on the supply of these products and the rising cost of gasoline. In addition, fuel traders might have begun cornering the market on these products. The market rate of RMB shows that the North Korean currency is slightly stronger.

The survey areas consist of two locations in Yanggang Province and a city. There is no difference among the locations in terms of price differences. The cost of gasoline and diesel has risen markedly by 23% and 34%, respectively. Our ASIAPRESS reporter explained, “There is a rumor that fuel prices are set to rise further.” The actual exchange rate with Chinese RMB is KPW 1,300 and had been stable, but now shows more than a 5% drop of with the North Korean Won. It is not certain whether the economic sanctions are the cause of the changes in the strength of the North Korean currency.

Locations for survey were a city in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province. The prices of both regions showed not much difference. The fuel price, plummeted in the early December, bounced back. The corn went up by 20%. The reporting partner explains: As the corn was poorly harvested this year, the price keeps going up in the market. The prices of daily necessities from China and clothes show gradual falling. Seafood can be found at every market in abundance.

Report from Hoeryong City of North Hamgyong Province and Hyesan City of Yanggang Province. Price index of each city is almost identical. The price of rice and corn keeps on going down. It is said that the authority cracks down on use of Chinese Yuan at markets.

While fuel price keeps going up, rice and corn, namely, the staple food, went down according to market research by ASIAPRESS at Yanggang Province. Reporting partner who has done the research explained “Rice price went down temporarily because it is harvesting season.” The partner also opined that the reason why the fuel price is higher than that of other area is because there is no direct supply of fuel to Yanggang Province.”
