The research sites are the Ryanggang and North Hamkyung Province. Although trade with China has become active since the latter half of March, the Chinese yuan has soared due to a serious shortage of foreign currency at trading companies. The Chinese yuan is at an all-time high according to our research. Food prices are said to be fluctuating dramatically due to unstable distribution.

The research sites are the Ryanggang and North Hamkyung Province. The RMB soared more than 10% compared to the previous week. This seems to be the reason why trading companies are busy buying RMB due to the shortage of foreign currency. The price of white rice has also increased. It is unclear whether this is caused by a distribution issue or if there was a decrease in inventory in the first place.

Since the amount to be sold at state-run food stores is fixed, residents have to buy what they are short of non-regularly. However the prices are rising because the authorities are strictly controlling the export of grain from rural areas. Demand for cheap corn is high.

Researchers say this is because the outflow of food from rural areas continues to be strictly controlled, leading to shortages. Meanwhile, in early December, state-run food stores sold 4 kilograms of white rice for 4,700 won and 3 kilograms of corn for 2,100 won (prices are per kilogram). People have to make up their shortfall by buying from suppliers, but the prices are rising.

The research sites are the Ryanggang and North Hamkyung Province. The decline in staple food prices was due to the emergence of potatoes and barley. Especially the drop in corn, appears to be caused by traders trying to sell off their stocks before the harvest in late August. However, researchers say that it is not working positively for the urban citizens in need who have lost their cash income.

The research sites are the Ryanggang and North Hamkyung Province. The US dollar hits the highest price in the recent two years. Is it due to the impact of the global appreciation of the dollar? As the COVID-19 subsides, expectations are rising for the resumption of trade with China in the two regions. A trading company began buying medicinal herb materials for export. However, for the time being, it is likely that exports will via Sinuiju.

The survey sites are the Ryanggang and North Hamkyung Province. The sharp rise in the US dollar is probably due to the impact of the global appreciation of the dollar, but it is cheaper than in August. According to the investigator, “Residents' possession of foreign currency have decreased, and black market trading of foreign currency is extremely low." The same is true for the market, and it is said that merchants abandoning their sales floors are appearing endlessly. The poverty of city dwellers is terrible.

The research was conducted in North Hamkyung Province and Ryanggang Province. The reason why food prices have fallen may be due to the authorities' strict crackdown on hoarding and mass sales. There are many reports that military personnel are starving. It is said that soldiers are starving the most at this time of the year, as they have not yet finished removing rice from the farms. According to the researcher, there is a rampant refusal to accept the "Tonpyo" money coupons, and they are not being used much in the market.

The research was conducted in North Hamkyung Province and Ryanggang Province. Several investigators believe that white rice and corn prices have fallen because of rumours that they are being sold at lower prices at state-run food marketing centres. Instead of an inflow of this fall's harvest from neighbouring farming villages, companies buy from the south and sell it at the market.

As for the drop in food prices, the reporting partner explained, "Food prices are high in North Hamkyung Province and Ryanggang Province, and traders are bringing in more food from other areas. Fuel oil prices were significantly lower. "I think it is due to a decrease in demand for vehicles," said the researcher. The research area was Hyesan City of Yanggang Province. Consumer price might be different from that of other area regardless the difference in foreign exchange rate. In addition to the fact that the city of Hyesan has been blocked until November 21, tight control of transport vehicles carrying the goods from other regions has raised the food prices.

Foreign exchange rate has been on the decline since late October. If the won appreciates, prices should fall, yet food prices are rising. The price of fuel that depends on imports has been lowered, which is negligible. In the domestic market, strict controls on the use of foreign currency continue.

North Korean Won surged 32 percent to the Chinese Yuan and 15 percent to the U.S. dollar. The reason is unclear, but analysts here say the authorities are inducing a drop in the exchange rate in preparation for the resumption of trade with China. The sudden strengthening of the won is causing confusion in the pricing of goods, said the surveyor. The survey was done at two locations in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province.

The survey was done at three locations in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province. Oil price plunged more than 30 percent. It is because that the control on moving for Corona's quarantine has been strengthened since late July and demand has decreased due to the economic recession. But isn’t it because of stable supply from China and Russia?

Yanggang Province was the location for the survey. Apart from the severe fluctuations in the U.S. Dollar and Chinese Yuan, the North Korean won is going down little by little. Merchants are buying foreign currency due to the prolonged anxiety of the Corona disaster, the surveyor said. The border blockade has reduced the inventory of Chinese rice but that of the domestic rice increased.

The research was made at two locations in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province. Amid the chaos of the Corona disaster, the price of rice has been stable due to the authorities' strong price intervention. Fuel prices continue to rise. It would be better to see the price trend on a North Korean won basis as the international exchange rate for US Dollar, Yuan and Yen fluctuates unexpectedly.

Due to the blocking of the Chinese border to prevent new types of pneumonia, insufficient supply of Chinese goods is pushing up prices. The price of cooking oil has nearly tripled. Gasoline prices are also rising. The price of rice which includes products from North Korea fell about 15 percent due to the authorities' forced price cuts. Concerns about rising prices have been spreading in North Korea.

Likely due to the rising value of the U.S. dollar, the value of Chinese yuan surged by 8% and the price of domestically-produced rice also shot up. However, the price of rice, as displayed in markets, has remained unchanged at 4.3 won. Meanwhile, the market price for U.S. dollars rose by 10% to 9,463 won/dollar. Going forward, attention must be paid to the trend of the North Korean won.

I surveyed two areas in North Hamgyong Province. Despite the stable exchange rate for Chinese yuan, the price of rice has been rising by about 10% since June. Gasoline, on the other hand, fell by about 20% from mid-May. The reasons for these changes are yet unknown but I intend to get to the bottom of it.

The survey location was a city in North Hamgyong Province. The price index remains stable in June. It says that the prices of the Chinese goods show stability due to active smuggling. But there are some complaints that the quality of everyday life has not improved notably. The power supply which was recovered momentarily deteriorated again.

The surveys were carried out in two locations, in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. The North Korean domestic brand, “Baekma Gasoline,” is available at the market. The price of KPW 9,310/kg is cheaper than that of the imported gasoline. The quality of the gasoline, refined from crude oil, is so low that it can’t be used for in a car. Other prices also indicated a slight rise.

The surveys were carried out in three locations in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. Notably, gasoline and diesel dropped sharply. They have decreased by 35% since early April and by 65% since late February when prices peaked. As of last April, the price of gasoline was KPW8,400/kg. This was just prior to a sharp rise in fuel prices.

The reasons are not known, but there is a rumor that fuel was brought in from Chongjin City. There is also a possibility of importation from Russia.

We selected two locations in Yanggang Province for survey. Gasoline and diesel have risen sharply since the beginning of the year and continue to fetch a high price. The price hike that has occurred under the international economic sanctions is due to state control on the supply of these products and the rising cost of gasoline. In addition, fuel traders might have begun cornering the market on these products. The market rate of RMB shows that the North Korean currency is slightly stronger.

The survey areas consist of two locations in Yanggang Province and a city. There is no difference among the locations in terms of price differences. The cost of gasoline and diesel has risen markedly by 23% and 34%, respectively. Our ASIAPRESS reporter explained, “There is a rumor that fuel prices are set to rise further.” The actual exchange rate with Chinese RMB is KPW 1,300 and had been stable, but now shows more than a 5% drop of with the North Korean Won. It is not certain whether the economic sanctions are the cause of the changes in the strength of the North Korean currency.

While fuel price keeps going up, rice and corn, namely, the staple food, went down according to market research by ASIAPRESS at Yanggang Province. Reporting partner who has done the research explained “Rice price went down temporarily because it is harvesting season.” The partner also opined that the reason why the fuel price is higher than that of other area is because there is no direct supply of fuel to Yanggang Province.”
