The research was conducted in North Pyongan Province, Ryanggang Province and North Hamkyung Province. Although the ban on the use of foreign currencies continues in North Korea, more and more people are trying to hold Chinese yuan and U.S. dollars due to anxiety caused by the worsening economy. On April 15, NHK broadcast a video of a freight train from Dandong to Sinuiju. It is likely that trade will gradually resume.

The research was conducted in North Hamkyung Province and Ryanggang Province. Despite the global trend of U.S. dollar and Chinese yuan appreciation, only the U.S. dollar has declined. The reason is unknow. The public continues to be in severe poverty, but in March, food was distributed at small and medium-sized enterprises in the provinces. This may be a relief measure by the government.

The research was conducted in North Hamkyung Province. Ryanggang Province was excluded from the statistics due to the possibility of remaining effects of the lockdown. Although there is no shortage of food in markets, it seems that rations to military and civil servants are only available for themselves. The continued rise in fuel prices is a concern.

The survey was performed in North Pyongan Province and Ryanggang Province. The price of fuel has been falling ever since the beginning of the year. Gasoline prices are 20% lower than at the end of last year. Some say that demand has decreased due to economic paralysis, but there is no exact evidence of this. There has been a great deal of disappointment within the country as information circulated that the resumption of trade with China would be delayed due to the large increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Jilin Province.

Foreign exchange rate has been on the decline since late October. If the won appreciates, prices should fall, yet food prices are rising. The price of fuel that depends on imports has been lowered, which is negligible. In the domestic market, strict controls on the use of foreign currency continue.

North Korean Won surged 32 percent to the Chinese Yuan and 15 percent to the U.S. dollar. The reason is unclear, but analysts here say the authorities are inducing a drop in the exchange rate in preparation for the resumption of trade with China. The sudden strengthening of the won is causing confusion in the pricing of goods, said the surveyor. The survey was done at two locations in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province.

It is because that the control on moving for Corona's quarantine has been strengthened since late July and demand has decreased due to the economic recession. Yanggang Province was the location for the survey. Apart from the severe fluctuations in the U.S. Dollar and Chinese Yuan, the North Korean won is going down little by little. Merchants are buying foreign currency due to the prolonged anxiety of the Corona disaster, the surveyor said. The border blockade has reduced the inventory of Chinese rice but that of the domestic rice increased.

The research was made at two locations in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province. Amid the chaos of the Corona disaster, the price of rice has been stable due to the authorities' strong price intervention. Fuel prices continue to rise. Compared to before the border blockade, gasoline and diesel rose by 30 percent. It would be better to see the price trend on a North Korean won basis as the international exchange rate for US Dollar, Yuan and Yen fluctuates unexpectedly.

The price was exactly the same as that of 10 days ago. The Chinese products not in the list, however, are rising, with propane gas used by the wealthy becoming 40 percent more expensive. The exchange rate is stable.

Due to the blocking of the Chinese border to prevent new types of pneumonia, insufficient supply of Chinese goods is pushing up prices. The price of cooking oil has nearly tripled. Gasoline prices are also rising. The price of rice which includes products from North Korea fell about 15 percent due to the authorities' forced price cuts. Concerns about rising prices have been spreading in North Korea.

The research had been made at two locations in Yanggang Province. Likely due to the rising value of the U.S. dollar, the value of Chinese yuan surged by 8% and the price of domestically-produced rice also shot up. However, the price of rice, as displayed in markets, has remained unchanged at 4.3 won. Meanwhile, the market price for U.S. dollars rose by 10% to 9,463 won/dollar. Going forward, attention must be paid to the trend of the North Korean won.

I surveyed two areas in North Hamgyong Province. Despite the stable exchange rate for Chinese yuan, the price of rice has been rising by about 10% since June. Gasoline, on the other hand, fell by about 20% from mid-May. The reasons for these changes are yet unknown but I intend to get to the bottom of it.

The survey location was a city in North Hamgyong Province. The price index remains stable in June. It says that the prices of the Chinese goods show stability due to active smuggling. But there are some complaints that the quality of everyday life has not improved notably. The power supply which was recovered momentarily deteriorated again.

The surveys were carried out in two locations, in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. The North Korean domestic brand, “Baekma Gasoline,” is available at the market. The price of KPW 9,310/kg is cheaper than that of the imported gasoline. The quality of the gasoline, refined from crude oil, is so low that it can’t be used for in a car. Other prices also indicated a slight rise.

It is said that people are disappointed because the high-ranking South-North Korean meeting was cancelled. The meeting was scheduled on May 16. Evidence suggests that the expectations for a dialogue between the South and the North is growing.

The surveys were carried out in three locations in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. Notably, gasoline and diesel dropped sharply. They have decreased by 35% since early April and by 65% since late February when prices peaked. As of last April, the price of gasoline was KPW8,400/kg. This was just prior to a sharp rise in fuel prices.

The reasons are not known, but there is a rumor that fuel was brought in from Chongjin City. There is also a possibility of importation from Russia.

The survey was made at two locations in Yanggang Province. According to the statistics of the Chinese Customs Office as of March 23, the export to China from North Korea has been dropped by 95% since the same month of the previous year. The shortage of foreign currency might contribute the decline of KPW to 1,400 for exchange.

The survey was made at two points in Yanggang Province. KPW, expected to continue depreciation, rose. The exchange rate has been stable even though the shortage of foreign currency has continued due to the ongoing economic sanction. The prices for fuel and staple food remain unchanged. Appreciation of KPW helped the decrease of price in some items at this time.

The survey area is Yanggang Province. The price of fuel in this area has been constantly rising since the end of 2017. Staple foodstuffs are showing a slight drop in price. The price of firewood for cooking and heating continues to rise sharply. The average cost of wood is RMB 120-150 per 1 square meter, as the authorities are cracking down on illegal logging.

We selected two locations in Yanggang Province for survey. Gasoline and diesel have risen sharply since the beginning of the year and continue to fetch a high price. The price hike that has occurred under the international economic sanctions is due to state control on the supply of these products and the rising cost of gasoline. In addition, fuel traders might have begun cornering the market on these products. The market rate of RMB shows that the North Korean currency is slightly stronger.

The survey areas consist of two locations in Yanggang Province and a city. There is no difference among the locations in terms of price differences. The cost of gasoline and diesel has risen markedly by 23% and 34%, respectively. Our ASIAPRESS reporter explained, “There is a rumor that fuel prices are set to rise further.” The actual exchange rate with Chinese RMB is KPW 1,300 and had been stable, but now shows more than a 5% drop of with the North Korean Won. It is not certain whether the economic sanctions are the cause of the changes in the strength of the North Korean currency.

Locations for survey were a city in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province. The prices of both regions showed not much difference. The fuel price, plummeted in the early December, bounced back. The corn went up by 20%. The reporting partner explains: As the corn was poorly harvested this year, the price keeps going up in the market. The prices of daily necessities from China and clothes show gradual falling. Seafood can be found at every market in abundance.

While fuel price keeps going up, rice and corn, namely, the staple food, went down according to market research by ASIAPRESS at Yanggang Province. Reporting partner who has done the research explained “Rice price went down temporarily because it is harvesting season.” The partner also opined that the reason why the fuel price is higher than that of other area is because there is no direct supply of fuel to Yanggang Province.”
