Oct. 28, 2019 comment The research had been made at two locations in Yanggang Province. North Korean rice price dropped by 4.8 in Chinese Yuan due to fall harvest, while the fuel price increased in terms of North Korean Won as US Dollar got stronger. It is said that business activities are sluggish in most of the markets.

Aug. 6, 2019 comment Likely due to the rising value of the U.S. dollar, the value of Chinese yuan surged by 8% and the price of domestically-produced rice also shot up. However, the price of rice, as displayed in markets, has remained unchanged at 4.3 won. Meanwhile, the market price for U.S. dollars rose by 10% to 9,463 won/dollar. Going forward, attention must be paid to the trend of the North Korean won.

July. 17, 2019 comment I surveyed two areas in North Hamgyong Province. Despite the stable exchange rate for Chinese yuan, the price of rice has been rising by about 10% since June. Gasoline, on the other hand, fell by about 20% from mid-May. The reasons for these changes are yet unknown but I intend to get to the bottom of it.

Jun. 25, 2018 comment The survey location was a city in North Hamgyong Province. The price index remains stable in June. May. 24, 2018 comment The surveys were carried out in two locations, in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. The North Korean domestic brand, “Baekma Gasoline,” is available at the market. The price of KPW 9,310/kg is cheaper than that of the imported gasoline. The quality of the gasoline, refined from crude oil, is so low that it can’t be used for in a car. Other prices also indicated a slight rise.

May. 8, 2018 comment The surveys were carried out in three locations in Yanggang and North Hamgyong Provinces. Notably, gasoline and diesel dropped sharply. They have decreased by 35% since early April and by 65% since late February when prices peaked. As of last April, the price of gasoline was KPW8,400/kg. This was just prior to a sharp rise in fuel prices.
The reasons are not known, but there is a rumor that fuel was brought in from Chongjin City. There is also a possibility of importation from Russia. |

Jan. 11, 2018 comment We selected two locations in Yanggang Province for survey. Gasoline and diesel have risen sharply since the beginning of the year and continue to fetch a high price. The price hike that has occurred under the international economic sanctions is due to state control on the supply of these products and the rising cost of gasoline. In addition, fuel traders might have begun cornering the market on these products. The market rate of RMB shows that the North Korean currency is slightly stronger. |

Dec. 29, 2017 comment The survey areas consist of two locations in Yanggang Province and a city. There is no difference among the locations in terms of price differences. The cost of gasoline and diesel has risen markedly by 23% and 34%, respectively. Our ASIAPRESS reporter explained, “There is a rumor that fuel prices are set to rise further.” The actual exchange rate with Chinese RMB is KPW 1,300 and had been stable, but now shows more than a 5% drop of with the North Korean Won. It is not certain whether the economic sanctions are the cause of the changes in the strength of the North Korean currency.

Dec. 12, 2017 comment Locations for survey were a city in North Hamgyong Province and Yanggang Province. The prices of both regions showed not much difference. The fuel price, plummeted in the early December, bounced back. The corn went up by 20%. The reporting partner explains: As the corn was poorly harvested this year, the price keeps going up in the market. The prices of daily necessities from China and clothes show gradual falling. Seafood can be found at every market in abundance.

Oct. 25, 2017 comment While fuel price keeps going up, rice and corn, namely, the staple food, went down according to market research by ASIAPRESS at Yanggang Province. Reporting partner who has done the research explained “Rice price went down temporarily because it is harvesting season.” The partner also opined that the reason why the fuel price is higher than that of other area is because there is no direct supply of fuel to Yanggang Province.”
