◆The Shadow of Brainwashing Cast Over Pitiful Deaths
According to South Korean intelligence estimates, approximately 2,000 North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia have died.
Watching news from various countries about the sad end of North Korean soldiers and an interview with a North Korean soldier captured in Ukraine who said "If I had a grenade, I would have committed suicide," I could detect the dark shadow of North Korean education cast over their choices. The only way for North Korean children who sang "I want to be a hero" in their childhood to actually become heroes as adults was to die shouting "Long live Kim Jong-un."
In the next installment, through testimony from North Korean defectors who experienced military life in North Korea, we will examine the dangers of heroism prevalent in the North Korean military by analyzing how heroism dominates North Korean soldiers' mental world and influences their behavior. (Part 3 of this series will be published in mid-October.)
