The lower Yalu River region where recovery work from late July last year's torrential rains continues. When lunchtime came, they gathered together and hurriedly ate enormous amounts of corn rice. (ASIAPRESS Editorial Team)

◆Embankment Like a Castle Wall
Eojeok Island in Uiju County is a mid-river island in the Yalu River, where the river width with China is narrow. It's also a tourist spot called "Ilbogwa" (One Step Across) because it's said you can jump across in one step. However, visiting the "Ilbogwa" site this year, North Korean land was not visible, blocked by a high embankment.

At this location where homes and fields were swept away by last summer's floods, modern new apartments like those on Wihwa Island have been completed. In the embankment piled like a castle wall, determination to never be flooded again was evident.

Embankment construction continues even now. Looking into the construction site, large numbers of young soldiers had been mobilized, laying concrete blocks one by one on slopes and attaching them with mortar.
