There is a landfill site about 300 meters from the North Korean side of the Tumen River that will serve as a work base. A crane, concrete mixer truck, excavator, and workers can be seen.

◆Already Landfilled to Secure Access Road

North Korea and Russia share approximately 15 kilometers of border at the lowest reaches of the Tumen River. A railway bridge connects Rason in North Korea with Khasan in Russia, and it appears this has been used to transport large quantities of North Korean weapons and ammunition for the Ukraine war since around November 2022.

About 500 meters downstream from there, construction has begun on a new automobile bridge. In mid-September, ASIAPRESS went to Fangchuan in Hunchun, Jilin Province, China, and photographed the construction progress with an ultra-telephoto camera.

The width of the Tumen River in this area is about one kilometer. The river has already been blocked from the North Korean side to about halfway across, creating a road through which earth, materials, and vehicles can pass.

Additionally, there is a large landfill area about 300 meters from the North Korean side that will likely serve as a base for pier construction, and heavy equipment can be seen being transported there. No floating pier is visible. At least three workers can be seen, one of whom appeared to be wearing a military uniform.
