◆Is the Goal to Secure a New Strategic Corridor?
On June 19, 2024, North Korea and Russia signed an "Agreement on the Construction of a Tumen River Border Automobile Bridge" in conjunction with concluding the "Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." On April 30, 2025, North Korean and Russian state media reported that a groundbreaking ceremony for the vehicle bridge was held on both banks.

According to this, the construction period is one and a half years, and the bridge will be two lanes with a width of approximately 7 meters. The length of the bridge spanning the Tumen River will reach about one kilometer.

With the invasion of Ukraine as a catalyst, the close relationship between North Korea and Russia has developed into what is essentially a new military alliance. Both countries will likely use the automobile bridge under construction as a strategic artery to supplement the aging existing railway bridge. (ISHIMARU Jiro)
