◆Seafood cleared too? “Squid is piling up in warehouses”

Reporting Partners A and B in Ryanggang Province both said that seafood exports also appear to be starting. Seafood is also subject to economic sanctions.

Reporting Partner B said, “Seafood can’t be exported in large volumes, so it’s being done partially, in lots of around 5 tons.” B added that, as with minerals, some seafood has already been exported to China.

Reporting Partner A said: “Some traders think seafood will be cleared for shipment too. They’re stockpiling squid in warehouses while they wait for exports. Others are hoarding it because they expect prices to rise. People are hoping exports will resume.”

China has already begun exporting sanctioned vehicles to North Korea. If it also imports North Korean minerals and seafood, it will be hard for China to escape criticism that it is ignoring international law despite being a permanent member of the Security Council. The direction of North Korea-China trade bears watching.
