Beyond wigs, there is also "contract processing" work making synthetic eyelashes, accessories, decorative items, and similar products. The photograph below shows a knitted figurine processed in North Korea. It was taken and sent by a reporting partner in northern North Korea. Upon close inspection, you can see the stitching is even and finished carefully. The completion unit price for all such items is 0.3 Chinese yuan (0.04 USD).
Additionally, ASIAPRESS's survey is based on May-June data, so figures may have changed since July. Although the survey covered only Ryanggang Province and North Hamgyong Province, it is highly likely that in other regions as well people seeking income are flocking to "contract processing" work, though we were unable to obtain confirmed information on this.
